The global COVID-19 pandemic has had many broad-reaching impacts on businesses and industries around the world. One issue facing companies in the industrial sector is short-term and longterm storage solutions for mechanical equipment. While the COVID-19 National Emergency continues, companies are adversely affected by conditions forcing either closures or reduced uptime that are disruptive to business operations.
Longterm and Short-term Storage Solutions
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies must find a way to protect their investments. For businesses in the mechanical sector, this means finding suitable solutions to keep mechanical investments in functioning order. While there is no standard requirement for longer-term storage, length of storage duration generally comes in three categories:
- Up to 3 months
- 6-12 months
The goal of any long-term storage plan is to safeguard components and processes to reduce downtime and get systems back up and running as quickly as possible and without due hardships when normal operations resume following the COVID-19 pandemic. Critical accessories must be available, and any new equipment must be installed as quickly and safely as possible.
Preparing Conveyor Drive Systems
Conveyor drive systems have special considerations for successful longer-term storage solutions. This includes a suitable plan for preparation for gear reducers and bearings for potentially long periods of downtime and potentially getting gear reducers ready for bringing them back online when the time to start back up.
Safe Shutdown Procedures
In order to safely shut down for a period of time, gearing must be properly drained and an adequate amount of vapor barrier(such as VCI) be added for protection at shut down, then sealed up with a solid vent plug. This will protect internal bearings and gears from rusting and seizing up upon restart.
Another method would be to fill the gear reducer 100% full with lubricant prior to storage. The exterior outside should also be thoroughly cleaned and any rust removed and repainted to prevent rust and contamination to occur.
If equipment is to be removed choosing the correct location is critical. A storage location should be clean and dry. It should not have any temperature fluctuations or subject equipment to rain, dust, and humidity. A temperature range of 50ºF – 120ºF is ideal. Vibrations should be minimized as well.
