IP Rating System: What Does it Mean?

Posted on by Kurz Industrial Solutions

What does the rating mean and why does it affect my asset?

The IP (Ingress Protection) Rating System is recognized internationally, it determines the level of proven protection against liquid and solid environmental factors. The ingress protection rating consists of the letters IP followed by two numbers. These two numbers tell you what level of protection your asset has against the elements and how well it prevents material from entering the asset.

The first number tells you the amount of protection your asset has against solid materials. The second number then tells you what level of protection your asset has against liquid materials. The bigger the number, the better the protection.

First number – Protection against solids
0 No protection.
1 Protected against solid objects greater than 50 mm.
2 Protected against solid objects greater than 12 mm diameter.
3 Protected against solid objects greater than 2.5mm diameter.
4 Protected against solid objects greater than 1.0mm diameter.
5 Dust protected.
6 Dust tight. No Ingress of dust.

Second number – Protection against liquids
0 No protection.
1 Protected against vertically dripping water.
2 Protected against dripping water when tilted up to 15°.
3 Protected against spraying water at an angle of up to 60° from vertical.
4 Protected against splashing water when the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15°.
5 Protected against water jets from any direction
6 Protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water.
7 Protected against the effects of short term immersion (under defined conditions of pressure and time).
8 Protected against submersion (under conditions specified by the manufacturer).
9k Protected against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray downs.

So why would I want an asset with an IP69K rating?

IP69K rating is the highest level of protection an asset can have, this means it is rated to keep out all dust as well as high temperature/pressure water. The assets that have this certification are great for applications that are outside (aggregates industry) or applications that require heavy washdown or extreme sanitization (food industry).

In the food processing industry hygiene, cleanliness, and sanitation are of the utmost importance. An asset with the IP69K rating will be able to handle the daily barrage of chemicals, high pressure, high temperature washdowns they receive that keeps them sanitary. The IP69K rating ensures that your assets have undergone testing to prove its durability and resistance to external elements.

How is a IP69K rating obtained?

The water test is performed by placing assets on a turntable that spins at 5-6 RPM. it is then sprayed at close range (4-6 inches away from the asset) with IP69K testing criteriaapproximately 4 gallons/minute of water, at a pressure of 1160-1450 psi, and a temperature of 176°F. The asset is then deemed the IP69K rating if it completely withstands water entry.
