When you’re looking for a place to live or travel, the weather is an important consideration. You may be familiar with some of the windiest cities in the U.S. and around the world, but what about the ones with no wind? If you’d prefer a location with minimal winds, there are many to choose from. In the United States, four of the least windy cities are located in Arizona. They have an average annual wind speed of just over one MPH. If you’re looking for a low-wind city, here are the top three destinations in the country.

Catalina Foothills, AZ

Catalina Foothills

With an average wind speed of just 1.1 MPH throughout the year, Catalina Foothills in Arizona takes the lead as the least windy city in the United States. Catalina Foothills has a population of 50,796. On average, this city gets about 13 inches of rainfall annually compared to the U.S. average of 38 inches each year. It also has zero inches of snow each year, while the U.S. average is 28 inches. Catalina Foothills has a higher volume of sunny days each year (285) compared to the national average of 205 sunny days. The city of Tucson, also a less windy city, is 2.5 miles away.

Tucson, AZ

Tucson, Arizona also has an average annual wind speed of 1.1 MPH. Tucson is one of Arizona’s largest cities. It is a popular destination for living and visiting in America. Tucson also enjoys a warm, sunny, and mild climate. Furthermore, it has a lower cost of living than the national average. Like Catalina Foothills, Tucson receives an average of 13 inches of rain each year. It gets about one inch of snow each year. Tucson has approximately 50 days of precipitation each year and 287 days of sunshine. Its elevation is 2,652, which is above the U.S. average of 2,443 feet.

Casas Adobes, AZ

Casas Adobes in Arizona ties with Catalina Foothills and Tucson for the lowest average wind speed in the U.S. Its annual average wind speed is also just 1.1 MPH. The lowest average monthly temperatures occur in December at 51 degrees. The highest average monthly temperatures are in June. The average high in this month is 87 degrees. Casas Adobes receives some form of precipitation for about 48 days each year. Its average rainfall amount is 12 inches and it gets no measurable snowfall. Casas Adobes has about 17 days each year where nighttime lows drop below freezing. This city has approximately 285 days of sunshine annually. Its comfort index is 7.5, which is above the U.S. national average of 7. The most pleasant months of the year are March, April, and November.

Factors in Determining Wind Speed

These three cities have very low annual wind speeds as determined by meteorological data. However, many factors that contribute to a city’s ranking in terms of wind speed. Major weather systems, which may occur throughout the year, are the biggest influencing factor in determining wind speed in America. Volatile weather is caused primarily by low sea-level pressure and strong pressure gradients. In areas dominated by high-pressure systems such as Arizona, winds are typically lighter and more predictable. Keep in mind that even cities with average wind speed around one MPH will still periodically get storms and higher wind gusts.

While some U.S. cities are known for their windy climates, others are quite the opposite. Such is the case with Catalina Foothills, Tucson, and Casas Adobes in Arizona. These three cities have average winds of just 1.1 MPH and overall warm, mild climates. While they may see some snow in the winter and rainfall, their number of sunny days is greater than days with precipitation. Although these cities get periodic storms, devastating winds and weather conditions are rare.
